Mastermind - Spelling Development Game
This game is designed to make students use the vocabulary that they know how to spell already and use it to find or build new words.
Timing – Five minutes for each round.
Group – Any size, age and ability group can play this game.
You need – A whiteboard, whiteboard markers.
Setup – First draw a five line grid on the whiteboard
How to play – The tutor thinks of a word of five letters, any word that is known to the group is acceptable.
The students are prompted to shout out possible answers one at a time which the tutor will write on the board. If the student shouts out a word that contains the same letters as the tutor’s word, marks are put below the word. A cross X if the letter is not in the word, a dash - if it is in the tutor’s word, but not in that sequence and a tick √ if the right letter is in the right place.
In this example the tutors word is ‘chair’ and the students firstly shouted out ‘apple’ then ‘spare’ then ‘flair’ and finally chair.
A - S X F X C √ |
P X P X L X H √ |
P X A √ A √ A √ |
L X R - I √ I √ |
E X E X R √ R √ |
Variations – This can be played with any level of ability but for more advanced students why not try to play it using plural nouns or tricky words such as ‘nylon’.

Free English Vocabulary Lessons Within the vocabulary section of EVOLVE there are lessons based on the academic word list which was compiled in order of frequency by LALS, Victoria University of Wellington. Also under this section you will find advice on learning and retaining vocabulary and some short cuts to understanding new words using word roots. |
Free English Grammar Lessons Grammar is the first part of a language that can cause us confusion. Many natvie speakers don't know the finer points of grammar so it can be a difficult task to try to learn the grammar of another language. Our grammar section takes you through all the main grammar points and offers exercises to check understanding throughout. There are lessons on parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives...) right through to lessons on reported speech and relative clauses at the more advanced levels. Just remember that grammar is a set of rules that have been developed as a guide to the language, the language is not based on the rules. |
